Education
Queen's Award for Voluntary Service
For 50 years the Bluebell Railway has been serving the community
  • The experience of “Hands-on History” offered by the Bluebell, and the fullest possible interpretation of our industrial heritage, is something the Bluebell Railway’s Education Department is always eager to share with schools and colleges.

  • School groups are welcome from both primary and secondary age ranges, and the Museum’s Education Team tailor visits to Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum, with subjects varying from the social history of the Victorian or Edwardian eras through to an understanding of engineering and physics, for which the Bluebell offers an invaluable learning resource.

  • For children up to 8 years old, Bluebell runs the Stepney Club with a host of special membership benefits. Built in 1875, 'Stepney' was the first locomotive bought by the Bluebell Railway in 1960.

  • The Bluebell Railway's 9F Club supports the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society (BRPS) by allowing young people between 9 and 16 years of age to take an active role in helping to run the railway. Club members work in small groups under experienced adult supervision.

  • Beyond school leaving age, training provided by the Railway includes both engineering apprenticeships and the continued development of skills amongst our volunteer and paid staff.  More details of this aspect of the Railway's activities are available on a separate page.

  • Bluebell has won numerous awards for restoration including Heritage Railway Association's Carriage & Wagon Competitions in 1984, 1990, 1997, 2003 and 2007, and awards for the restoration of Horsted Keynes and Kingscote stations, the former being the largest station on any heritage line.

  • RegisteredMuseumIts extensive collection of historic artefacts and archives is open daily to visitor.  It is a Registered Museum (No.2144) and has curatorial advice from the National Railway Museum and London Transport Museum.  The Bluebell Railway Museum regularly shares knowledge and expertise with other organisations in the heritage railway field in historic restoration and operational matters.  A much enlarged and improved museum exhibition area has been designed and is being constructed as part of an HLF-funded project at Sheffield Park Station.
